Meeting AB 2975 Requirements with OPENGATE®: A Hospital-Ready Solution

California’s Assembly Bill 2975 (AB 2975) sets new standards for hospital public safety. By March 1, 2027, most licensed hospitals must implement weapons detection screening as part of their workplace violence prevention plan. While state-run facilities such as Corrections or State Hospitals are exempt, most acute care hospitals must comply.

What the Law Requires for Hospital Violence Prevention

Hospitals must provide screening at public access points, including main entrances, emergency departments, and labor and delivery units if accessible. Requirements include:

  • Automated detection: Primary screening must use automated systems, with handheld devices allowed only as secondary tools or in small or rural settings.
  • Trained operators: Non-clinical staff must monitor systems whenever the public has access.
  • Training: At least eight hours of instruction on device use, hospital protocols, de-escalation, and bias awareness are required.
  • Policies and signage: Hospitals must adopt clear procedures for detected weapons and refusals, and post signage assuring compliance with EMTALA.
  • Timeline: Once regulations are finalized, hospitals will have 90 days to comply.
